Every day we see our athletes making progress toward and ultimately achieving their goals. But, you don’t! So we asked our athletes to share a bit about their experience with customized programming, and 6-month veteran Whitney was the first to volunteer.


WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO TRY THE FRONT TRAINING ROOM?
It was four months until my thirtieth birthday and I felt like crap physically. I wanted to turn thirty as my healthiest and fittest I had ever been.

WHAT WAS YOUR TRAINING/FITNESS REGIME BEFORE YOU JOINED THEFTR?
Pretty much nothing, and definitely nothing consistently. I was born inherently lazy. But really I had always done some sporadic hiking, a little running – mostly just races, and I have a background as a yogi and yoga instructor. About three years ago I tried Crossfit for about six months and really liked it, but the difference in the results I have gotten at TheFTR blow the results I got from Crossfit out of the water.

WHAT WERE YOUR GOALS WHEN YOU STARTED, AND HAVE YOUR GOALS CHANGED/EVOLVED OVER THE LAST SIX MONTHS?
My simple goal of being in the best shape of my life as I turned thirty stayed the same for about the first four months, but as I progressed a couple new goals were added on, like being able to do one pull-up and being able to do one toes-to-bar.

Since accomplishing all of those goals, my new ones for this year are: Running a 1:40 half marathon, bouldering a pink dot and leading a 5.11 outside.

HAVE YOU ACCOMPLISHED ANYTHING THAT HAS SURPRISED YOU?
I saved all my old one-rep max PR’s from when I spent six months doing Crossfit consistently. Three weeks ago I had a re-test with TheFTR that showed what a huge difference this type of training has done for me, like:

  1. Old crossfit back-squat max: 70lbs | New FTR max: 145lbs
  2. Old Crossfit deadlift max: 80lbs | New FTR max: 165lbs
  3. Pull-ups required the biggest, thickest green elastic band available to barely get myself up there | Now I can do four at bodyweight!

Also, when I started I did not have a weight-loss goal, I just wanted to get fitter. But, by just pursuing all of my other goals and developing an athlete’s mindset, the scales tip twenty pounds lighter these days, and with the visible amount of muscle I have gained as well, I am very content with my body.

I am without a doubt in the fittest shape of my life and I can’t wait to see what I can do next!






WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO KEEP COMING IN AND DOING THE WORK, DAY AFTER DAY, WEEK AFTER WEEK, MONTH AFTER MONTH?
Seeing all my gains! I see progress every week. I am watching as I do things I never thought possible for myself. I just love seeing what might be within reach next. How far can I take this training and these skills if I give it my all?

HOW HAS THE SPORT OF CLIMBING, INTEGRATED INTO YOUR TRAINING, BEEN DIFFERENT THAN OTHER TRAINING PROGRAMS?
At first I was climbing to get fit, now I get fit to climb better. AND I LOVE IT. Having a coach who has been teaching me TECHNIQUE has taken my training from frustrating to fun.

HAVE YOU EVER REACHED A PLATEAU IN YOUR TRAINING (MENTAL OR PHYSICAL)? DID YOU CONQUER IT? HOW?
I haven’t. Well, at first I wasn’t as consistent about doing my workouts, especially in the climbing portion. Then I started going to workouts at 6AM every day to work with my coach, and she was able to give me one-on-one attention climbing. I realized I needed this extra climbing attention because I wasn’t getting anywhere with climbing. Being someone who had NEVER ONCE EVER bouldered in my life, it intimidated me, and my lack of knowledge made it stressful. India, my coach, helped me conquer those hurdles and still does every week. I can’t believe that I now look forward to bouldering.


ANY ADVICE YOU HAVE FOR SOMEONE WANTING TO UP THEIR TRAINING, OR WHO IS JUST STARTING OUT?
Training makes me accountable and gives me direction. It takes out so many of the questions that have always given me workout anxiety that has kept me out of gyms or trying new things that confuse me.

Without a doubt this is the best money I spend every month. TheFTR has made me an athlete and it can make you one, or even a more badass one too.
